Do persons on a board of directors for a company get a salary for serving?

I know that there are a couple or so persons that work in the company, so yes they would be paid but what about those that do not work at the company but are just part of the board of directors. Thanks all.

Public Comments

  1. Yes, typically. Of course, if it's your own start-up company, you probably can't afford that, so perhaps you'll limit your board to just a few, but public companies pretty much always pay their board.
  2. They get some payment which is rarely comparable with salary, could be $500 a month or so. Majority of board members, however, own large amounts of stock, which makes the monetary compensation a bit unnecessary.
  3. i work for a not-for-profit and the board members are volunteers. they do not get paid.
  4. THEY DON'T GET A SALARY- generally, they do get travel expenses and a nominal stipend per meeting. The BoD are an oversight board and woudl be conflicted if they were being paid a "salary".
