Can Exectutive Director serve on Board of Directors?

I was wondering if the executive director of a non profit corporation under IRS code 501 (c) 3 could serve as the President of the Board of Directors for the same company? The Executive Director is a paid position ($59k/Year). I was under the impression that IRS does not allow Board members to receive compensation for their work... So I guess my question is: Can a Board Member also be an Employee of the same company?
